Sample property rental scams


As you may already know, the property rental business is plagued with people trying to tease your money out of you.  Generally they are out of the country, "on a contract", they may have inherited a property from a deceased relative, or they may come up with a new story. The keys are never available, and the apartment is not available for viewing, and there are false photographs being used.  Most significant, nothing can be done for you until you have sent a deposit.  

Below you will find samples of the scamming messages that come to our notice (most recent first, with the offending email address where available).  You will see that the text often repeats (these scammers are LAZY!). 

If you receive any emails looking like these, be very careful.  And NEVER send any money to anyone without satisfying yourself that the apartment really exists, the keys are available locally and the offer is genuine.  In the case of sectional-title buildings it is usually possible to verify the identity of the owner by contacting the management office

I tried to look for an agent that I could give the document & the keys before I left but could not find any as a matter of urgency. And I don't want home misused in my absence that is why I took the keys and documents along with me. So I hope you will promise me to take very good care of the apartment always.
 
Attached are the interior pictures for you to have an idea how beautiful and spacious the inside looks, I will like you to get back to me with your final decision after viewing the interior pictures and let me know if you are interested in proceeding with the rental so forward me your rental application form ASAP.

I'm a project manager in civil engineering. I just moved in West Africa because my company has won an auction for a big construction project. I'll stay here for the next 3-4 years or more so I won't come back soon. I'm looking for someone to live in my Apartment from there.

I got a contract job in an engineering company for a construction project as part of the structural engineers to build a highrise building in NIGERIA. I am a Building tech specialist, so my accommodation period in LAGOS will be about 4 years, so that's the reason why i am renting out the unit. I do not intend to make profit out of it all i want is to find a good and clean person to take good care of the place. I`m the owner of the unit and it is furnished but if you want you can make use of your furnitures and help keep mine in the storage locker which is situated both in the unit and in the building and these does not attracts any funds.

The monthly rent am requesting for includes all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, 1 parking spots, air conditioning, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator, stove, laundry in-suite, washer and dryer) the monthly rent you will be paying includes all this and they will be taken care of as soon as you pay your rent.

Everything in this unit is functional and in good working conditions. Once you started staying in the unit and there is any case of any repairs which is as a result of normal faults like leakages, you will get in touch with me and i will get it fixed, i am in possession of the keys to the apartment which makes hard for you to view the unit. You can move into the unit when you receive the keys but the only problem is that am the only person who has the keys but i hope that we will be able to reach a compromise on this.
